Lortie Plays Chopin!
Frederic Chopin was Born on the 1st March, 1810 in Zelazowa, Poland. As such, we celebrate Chopin’s 200th anniversary this year, and there’s plenty of opportunity to hear his music. Today I heard Louis Lortie perform the Chopin Piano concerto #2, Op.21 with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Neeme Jarvi conducting. This recording is paired with the Schumann piano concerto, and yes… we celebrate Schumann’s anniversary this year, as well… in June. As such, this CD release on June 29th, 2010, is in honor of both composers birthdays!
I enjoyed Lortie’s playing of the Chopin concerto. While the music is heard quite often, I was struck by the wonderful feeling, the great phrasing, the great singing tone, and the fine balance between soloist and orchestra. I particularly enjoyed Lortie‘s performance of the singing gracefulness of the third movement.
