Leif Ove Andsnes!
CD to be issued on October 25, 2010
Rachmaninoff:
• Piano Concerto No.3 Op.30
• Piano Concerto No.4 Op.40
Internationally acclaimed pianist Leif Ove Andsnes teams up once again with conductor Antonio Pappano on his new recording of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos Nos. 3 & 4. Hailed as an editor’s choice, Gramophone praises Andsnes for his “customary balance of head and heart on this music and the Berlin Philharmonic under Pappano play magnificently.”
Andsnes and Pappano first recorded collaboration was the 2004 release of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2, with the Berliner Philharmoniker, which received glorious, world-wide acclaim and has shipped over 80,000 units worldwide.
I was first introduced to Leif Ove Andsness when I heard him play Mozart piano concerti. It was immediately clear that he is a major musician. After closer listening, I decided that for my personal taste, his tempi were simply too fast. When you hear these tempi at first, you are taken by Andsnes’ “machine gun” technique. But… I like to savor my Mozart, so my initial impressions cooled.
In the last two Rachmaninoff concerti, outstanding pianistic technique and rapid tempi are a pre-requisite, so I am looking forward to enjoying this recording.
Here is a preview of this great CD; First the rehearsal of the Rachmaninoff 3rd:
Now the performance of the third concerto:
