The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s much-anticipated first album is dedicated solely to Mozart. The leader and soloist is Richard Tognetti, violin. In Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra in E Flat K364 we hear Christopher Moore, as viola soloist.
This CD was issued July, 2010.
The first thing that struck me on this Hybrid SACD was the superb sound. The second thing was the excellent, sensitive, wonderful interpretation of my two favorite Mozart violin concerti. Mr. Tognetti’s playing is absolutely gorgeous! I enjoyed the highly musical playing, with fine phrasing and elegant, velvety sound. The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s support of the soloists is terrific, and there’s never a place where the soloists are covered by excessively loud playing by the orchestra.
The tracks on this excellent CD are:
1. Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216: I. Allegro
2. Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216: II. Adagio
3. Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216: III. Rondeau: Allegro
4. Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, “Turkish”: I. Allegro aperto – Adagio – Allegro aperto
5. Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, “Turkish”: II. Adagio
6. Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, “Turkish”: III. Tempo di menuetto
7. Sinfonia concertante in E flat major, K. 364: I. Allegro maestoso
8. Sinfonia concertante in E flat major, K. 364: II. Andante
9. Sinfonia concertante in E flat major, K. 364: III. Presto
There are outstanding performances, and I am ready to hear more from these Australian artists!
Here is Richard Tognetti, talking with us, and rehearsing with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. We hear some of the Mozart on the recording, and we hear about the historic violin on which he performs. The violin was made by Joseph Guarneri in 1743!
