Since Bach was somewhat cryptic in indicating the instrumentation of what is often regarded as his musical testament, The Art of Fugue has been subjected to an infinite variety of arrangements for all sorts of instruments. This recording follows a series of performances in which the musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin tested a highly unusual concept: rather than play uniformly one after the other the sections called “Contrapuncti” and Canons that Bach left us, they have made great efforts to diversify both the instrumentation and the structure to the point where we end up, to our delight, experiencing their interpretation as an exciting musical game for several players!
The Berlin Academy for ancient Music makes Bach’s counterpoint burst out with wonderful inventiveness and life. They provide the listener with maximum variety in scoring; Wonderful keyboard canons are interspersed between the fugues, which make this whole thing a terrific musical experience
Here is an example of this wonderful arrangement:
Here is a beautiful melding of the minds of two geniuses: Johann Sebastian Bach and Glenn Gould. Music by a genius, performed by another genius!
