Evgeny Sviridov

Evgeny Sviridov

  • Three sonatas by J.S.Bach, and two by Heinrich Biber
  • Performed by Evgeny Sviridov, violin and Zita Mikijanska, Harpsichord

There is no doubt about Mr. Sviridov’s strong musical training and also about the fact that he has been a prize winner at several competitions. When it comes to any music, and especially Baroque music, it is the interpreter’s style and execution that very much relate to the listener’s personal musical taste. For me personally, I would have preferred somewhat less use of open strings in these sonatas. Perhaps this is Mr. Sviridov’s way of trying to be “authentic”; but this style did not connect with me.

Also, for some reason, I expected in this music a warmer, darker, older Bach sound of the type that was produced by the legendary Nathan Milstein in his interpretation of these masterpieces. I felt that Mr. Sviridov’s sound came across too brilliant for this types of music that goes back to the 1700’s. Pretty subtle stuff; but that was my reaction.
