Vanska’s Sibelius
For me, the composer Jean Sibelius created amazing sounds to depict the cold, frigid landscape of the Finnish countryside. And his music went on to become a favorite of mine and of a large group of orchestral music lovers.
Finnish conductor Osmo Vanska first attracted the attention of a wider international audience when he conducted performances of the music of Jean Sibelius. This was followed by an acclaimed cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies, and most recently with a recording of Bruckner’s Fourth (‘Romantic’) Symphony.
Now, some 15 years after the appearance of his previous cycle of Sibelius’ symphonies, Vanska has returned to the works in recording, and with his Minnesota players, he has recorded the first disc in a new Sibelius cycle.
