Stravinsky: “The Firebird”
While the primary attraction of this CD is the Firebird Ballet by Stravinsky, the disc also includes arrangements of pieces by Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius.
Following the success of their recordings of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” and “Petrushka”, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton here perform “The Firebird” ballet by Igor Stravinsky.
The Firebird was Igor Stravinsky’s first full-length ballet, but not his first collaboration with Diaghilev and his Ballets Ruses: he orchestrated two piano compositions by Chopin (also featured on this disc) for use in another project.
The selections are:
Chopin:
- Nocturne No. 10 in A flat major, Op. 32 No. 2
orch. Igor Stravinsky
- Waltz No. 1 in E flat major ‘Grande Valse Brillante’, Op. 18
orch. Igor Stravinsky
Sibelius:
- Canzonetta, Op. 62a, from the incidental music to Kuolema
arr. Igor Stravinsky
Stravinsky:
- The Firebird
1910 Ballet Score
- Greeting Prelude
Tchaikovsky:
- The Sleeping Beauty: ‘Bluebird’ Pas de deux, arranged Stravinsky
arr. Igor Stravinsky
The music is performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Litton
