Beethoven: Complete Songs for Voice and Piano

The songs for voice and piano by Beethoven are not performed all that often, and I really do not know the reason. The reason is, perhaps, because so many of them are very sad and lonely.

This album of 3 CD’s contains all of these songs, and we get more than 3 hours of this music.

The selections are:

Beethoven:

Adelaide, Op. 46
An die ferne Geliebte (To the distant beloved), Op. 98
An die Geliebte, WoO 140
An die Hoffnung, Op. 94
Der Gesang der Nachtigall, WoO 141
Der Jüngling in der Fremde, WoO 138
Der Kuss, Op. 128
Lieder (6), Op. 75
Hochzeitslied, WoO105
La Tiranna, WoO 125
Songs (3) , Op. 83
Lieder (8), Op. 52
Lieder von Gellert (6), Op. 48
Lobkowitz-Kantate, WoO 106
Sehnsucht (Die stille Nacht undunkelt), WoO 146

Performed by Hermann Prey (baritone), Pamela Coburn (soprano) and Leonard Hokanson (piano)

This CD includes the rarely-heard 8 Lieder op.52, the Lobkowitz-Cantata, and the song “Der Jüngling in der Fremde”.

Here is Hermann Prey singing “An die ferne Geliebte” by Ludwig van Beethoven (wonderful!)

And here he is again singing “Der Kuss” by Ludwig van Beethoven

And yes… I’ll let you see Mr. Prey’s face now, as he sings one of my great favorites:

“Dichterliebe” is a collection of songs by Robert Schumann; performed by Hermann Prey and Leonard Hokanson:

“Im wunderschönen Monat Mai” (In the wonderfully beautiful month of May), and more songs from this collection…
