Music for clarinet
Today I have for you music for clarinet. And this music is wonderful because it is played with such insight, mellowness of tone, and great skill by British clarinettist, Emma Johnson
The selections are:
Crusell:
- Introduction and Variations on a Swedish Air Op. 12
Debussy:
- Rhapsody for clarinet & piano (or orchestra), L. 116 ‘Première rapsodie’
Tartini:
- Concertino
Weber:
- Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73
Performed by Emma Johnson (clarinet), with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier
The American Record Guide wrote:
“…this well varied, delicious issue…The mellowness of tone, the richly varied phrasing and the subtle dynamic gradations are amazing.”
Mozart was inspired to write a clarinet concerto and a clarinet quintet, because he had a friend who played this instrument beautifully. Similarly, Johannes Brahms also composed delightful chamber music for this instrument.
Here is Emma Johnson (clarinet) playing Mozart. And what a wonderfully sensitive, and beautifully-phrased performance it is!
And now Mozart’s deeply moving “Ave Verum”, with Emma Johnson – clarinet, and the ConTempo Quartet
