Mitsuko Uchida plays Schubert
Yesterday I listened carefully to Mitsuko Uchida, as she played several sonatas for piano by Franz Schubert. What a treat that was!
Ms Uchida studied piano in Vienna as a young girl, because her father was Japan’s ambassador there. As such, she was fortunate to be steeped in the Austrian way of performing these works: emphasis on flowing melody, careful adherence to dynamics, and emphasis on making beautiful music. Yea… I loved her performance.
Here are the selections in this album:
1. Piano Sonata No.16 In A Minor, D.845 – 1. Moderato
2. Piano Sonata No.16 In A Minor, D.845 – 2. Andante, Poco Mosso
3. Piano Sonata No.16 In A Minor, D.845 – 3. Scherzo (Allegro Vivace) – Trio (Un Poco Più Lento)
4. Piano Sonata No.16 In A Minor, D.845 – 4. Rondo (Allegro Vivace)
5. Piano Sonata No.9 In B, D.575 – 1. Allegro Ma Non Troppo
6. Piano Sonata No.9 In B, D.575 – 2. Andante
7. Piano Sonata No.9 In B, D.575 – 3. Scherzo (Allegretto)
8. Piano Sonata No.9 In B, D.575 – 4. Allegro Giusto
Ms. Uchida became well-known for interpretations of the works of Mozart. Her Schubert is really amazing, singing, and wonderful, as well.
Here is Ms. Uchida in the 4th movement of the Sonata #16 by Schubert:
