Johannes Brahms:
- String Quintets
Performed by the Uppsala Chamber Soloists
The Uppsala Chamber Soloists are one of Sweden’s most eminent string ensembles, specializing in Baroque, Classical, Romantic or new music, always performed with the same total control and stylistic sense.
Just as the name implies, these players are both chamber musicians and soloists.
The two charming Brahms string quintets on this new recording are delivered in their usual elegant, sensitive, and balanced way.
Brahms:
- String Quintet No. 1 in F major, Op. 88
- String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111
The tracks are as follows:
Johannes Brahms: String Quintet No. 1 in F major, Op. 88
I. Allegro non troppo ma con brio
II. Grave ed appassionato – Allegretto vivace – Presto
III. Allegro energico – Presto
Johannes Brahms: String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111
I. Allegro non troppo, ma con brio
II. Adagio
III. Un poco allegretto
IV. Vivace ma non troppo presto
MusicWeb International wrote on 24th May 2013:
“The sound here is brighter and more immediate. This allows the sometimes thick instrumental textures to emerge with great clarity and definition. Everything seems just right. Tempi, dynamics and phrasing are well judged. Intonation and ensemble marks the performances out with distinction.”
I love the Brahms String Quintets and sextets. These late compositions from Brahms’s pen are simply magnificent works that don’t get played in recitals as often as they should be because they require a string quartet to add a second violist.
