Stravinsky and Prokofiev:
- Violin Concertos
The two violin concertos performed on this recording display many similarities and differences. Both were created by composers in conflict with their native Russia – one choosing to return there, the other settling permanently in exile;
The concertos are:
Prokofiev:
- Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63
Stravinsky:
- Violin Concerto in D
Performed by Patricia Kopatchinskaja (violin), with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski
Prokofiev preserves the traditional formats of the concerto, as we know it from the likes of the Brahms violin concerto. Yet he also explores music with a new lyricism.
Stravinsky, however, reworks the trusted old concerto models while offering a new, expressive style.
