Mozart: Così fan tutte, K588
- Recorded at the Teatro Real de Madrid, 2013
Performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Real de Madrid, conducted by Sylvain Cambreling.
The singers are:
Anett Fritsch (Fiordiligi), Paola Gardina (Dorabella), Kerstin Avemo (Despina), Juan Francisco Gatell (Ferrando), Andreas Wolf (Guglielmo), William Shimell (Don Alfonso)
In this DVD, Austrian film director Michael Haneke tackles Mozart’s music and amusement in the relationship between lovers.
There are actually three couples in Haneke’s version of Mozart’s opera: the first two are the traditional couples: Dorabella and Ferrando and Flordiligi and Gugliemo; the third, however, are Don Alfonso and Despina.
This unconventional couple does not dispense a lesson in love here, but they exhibit a cruel streak towards the gender politics in the work in the usual libretto of Mozart’s tale.
Don Alfonso expresses his assessment that women are not capable of being faithful, and he proceeds to show us why that is so.
