Dvorak – Cello Concerto
Dvorak’s Cello concerto is the major performance goal of any serious cellist. On this CD, Jean-Guihen Queyras gives us one great performance. This is particularly evident in the second movement.
Conductor Jiri Belohlavek directs the Prague Philharmonia, and they create a beautiful atmosphere for this music. The woodwinds are clear, the brasses are energetic, and the strings are played with a fine warm technique.
What is also very nice is the fact that we get to listen to the Dvorak “Dumky” after the wonderful cello concerto. Here’s the list of tracks:
Dvorak:
- Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104
Performed by Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), with The Prague Philharmonia, Jirí Belohlávek
- Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90 (B166) ‘Dumky’
Performed by Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), Isabelle Faust (violin) and Alexander Melnikov (piano)
BBC Music Magazine wrote:
“The accompanying performance of the Dumky Trio is completely captivating; indeed their rendition of the four middle movements is among the finest available”
Here is Schumann’s ‘Fantasiestücke’ Op 73 No 1, as beautifully performed by Queyras:
