Jonathan Biss Performs:
- Schumann and Janacek
Jonathan Biss dedicated his 2012-2013 concert season to the music of Robert Schumann, declaring himself to be “a fanatic for every note Schumann wrote.” The project was entitled ‘Schumann: Under the Influence’ and explored Schumann’s influences and his legacy.
As such, Biss placed Schumann at the heart of his recitals, as he paired the composer’s captivating ‘Fantasiestücke‘ with his intimate ‘Davidsbündlertänze‘.
Highlighting the strong connections these works have with Janácek’s ‘On the overgrown path’, Biss created a rich texture by interspersing movements from the Janácek with the Schumann, as he subtly created each colorful sound world in mere moments.
On this CD we hear the results of this creative programming:
Janacek:
- Along an Overgrown Path, JW VIII/17, Book 1
Schumann:
- Fantasiestücke, Op. 12
- Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6
- Gesänge der Frühe, Op. 133: 5: Im Anfange ruhiges, im Verlauf bewegtes Tempo
Performed by Jonathan Biss (piano)
Jonathan Biss made his New York recital debut in 2000, and in early 2001 he performed with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Kurt Masur.
The Guardian recently observed that Jonathan Biss
- “… has few peers as a Schumann pianist today”.
