Mendelssohn, Grieg and Hough:
- Cello Sonatas.
This is a collection of somewhat less familiar sonatas, as performed by two fine artists:
Grieg:
- Cello Sonata in A minor, Op. 36
Hough:
- Sonata for cello and piano left hand ‘Les adieux’
Mendelssohn:
- Cello Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 58
Performed by Steven Isserlis (cello) and Stephen Hough (piano).
Edvard Grieg’s sole Cello Sonata has long been a favorite of performers and audiences. On this CD, it receives a sensitive interpretation from Steven Isserlis and Stephen Hough.
Right after the Grieg, the listener gets to hear Hough’s own Sonata for cello and piano left hand.
The final piece is the Mendelssohn amazing Cello Sonata Number 2. A spirit of passionate romanticism unifies the whole recording.
Here is some of the music from this recording:
And next, here is the wonderful Rachmaninov “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”, as played by Mr. Hough:
