I am an enthusiastic admirer of soprano, Christiane Karg. This morning I went for a hunt to see if there are any new recordings by her. In the end, I located an older CD that totally intrigued me.
The album title is “Verwandlung”. In German, this work means Transformation or Metamorphosis.
Ms. Karg is an extraordinary singer, because of her amazing interpretation skills. In this recording, we get a huge selection of songs by her, and the transformation seems to be the development of songs across a huge variety of composers.
Of course, we get songs by Schubert, Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Brahms, and Richard Strauss. This collection, however, also includes works by Mahler, Clara Wieck, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern. As such, we can hear how Lieder were transformed in their development over the years.
