Today… for the first time… I spent some time listening to the music created by American composer Mason Bates. He studied at Columbia University, at the Juilliard School, and he has earned a PhD from UC- Berkeley.
The Internet offered an opportunity to start my journey randomly, so I chose a piece that Mr. Bates composed called “Mothership”. This music features a lot of innovation through the use of electronics, and it also includes individual improvisation.
I liked what I heard. I found the music to be joyful, and tonal. It has a lot of syncopation, and individual solos.
