Beethoven died in Vienna in 1827 at age 56. Franz Schubert was the next great composer after Beethoven. Schubert, however, died just one year after Beethoven, in 1828, at age 31.
Schubert left us some amazing chamber music, as well as instrumental music for violin and for piano, and of course some great symphonies.
We are still able to enjoy some 600 surviving songs for male and female voice, accompanied by piano. Many of these Lieder have kept me company from an early age, because they were appreciated by both of my parents.
