The performance opens with two pieces from Robert Schumann, the “Manfred Overture”, a highly regarded piece inspired by Lord Byron’s poem, and his Cello Concert in A minor, featuring cellist Steven Isserlis.
Two additional pieces will be performed. Shchedrin’s much beloved “Naughty Limericks” or “Mischievous Folk Ditties” is a concert for orchestra based on Russian satirical folk songs.
Finally there will be Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story”, a suite of orchestral music from the musical, arranged by the composer himself.
