Concerti for Flute

As a follower of my posts, you are surely aware that I write often about music for string instruments, piano, and orchestral compositions. It is time for a change, so today I will share with you a new recording that features music for Flute:

Khachaturian:

  • Flute Concerto, transcription by Jean-Pierre Rampal, with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Enrique Diemecke conducting.

Rautavaara:

  • Dances with the Winds, Op. 69 (Concerto for Flutes & Orchestra)
    original version for four flutes, with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Dima Slobodeniouk conducting.
  • Dances with the Winds, Op. 69 (Concerto for Flutes & Orchestra)
    revised version for three flutes, with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Dima Slobodeniouk conducting.

The soloist is Sharon Bezaly, flute.

Sharon Bezaly is a fine flutist. Bezaly was born in Israel, but lives presently in Sweden. She has been an international star since 1997, when she began her solo flute career. She made her solo debut at 13 with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal transcribed Aram Khachaturian’s violin concerto for his own instrument. Khachaturian wrote his concerto in 1940, dedicating it to David Oistrakh, who also gave the first performance.

The composer always had a particular liking for the work, and when Rampal in 1968 asked him to compose a concerto for the flute, Khachaturian instead suggested that he should transcribe it. Rampal was given carte blanche when it came to making the necessary changes, and thus reworked the solo part completely.
