When it comes to Opera, I prefer the major masterpieces by Mozart: Magic Flute, Cosi fan Tutte, and Figaro. This morning, however, I listened to a scene from Strauss’ Opera Der Rosenkavalier as performed by Renee Fleming, and I was transfixed.
Strauss was a master when it came to creating melody that matched the spirit of the text. And his orchestration was really sublime. He had the ability to capture the listener, and to not let him go until the scene was completed.
