Last night, as the last event of the day, I listened to a recording of pianist Grigory Sokolv as he played at a concert in Paris. The first selection on the program was the Sonata number 9 in E-Major by Ludwig van Beethoven.
What amazing music that is! And it takes an artist of the stature of Mr. Sokolov to show us the details of this great work.
Sokolov is a no nonsense performer. He quickly strides to the stage, give a single bow, and gets down to business. Wonderful phrazing, great melodic line, and total adherence to dynamics follow. And then the listener is in for a wonderous experience.
