Andre Previn died today in New York at age 89.
I met him once, briefly, backstage at Carnegie Hall. He had attended a concert by his former wife, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.
I recall being surprised that he spoke in German with Ms. Mutter. Later it came to me that he was born in Germany, and the German language was his mother tongue.
He was a true musician: Pianist, composer, conductor, teacher.
I really enjoyed his elegant conducting style, and his dedication to follow the composer’s wishes.
May he Rest in Peace.
