The Maxwell Quartet is a fine group of musicians who clearly love the music of Joseph Haydn! Their new album features the three quartets Opus 71.
What is unique in this music is the fact that each of the three quartets is followed by about 6 minutes of wonderful old Scottish music which forms a lovely transitions between each of Haydn’s compositions. I especially enjoyed the Scottish tune following the final quartet, Opus 71 #3. This Lament is old sad and a wonderful contrast with the Haydn music that preceded it!
Each instrumentalist of the Maxwell Quartet is a fine musician in his own right. Together they give us an interpretation of these three quartets that Haydn would surely applaud.
Since its formation in 2010, the Maxwell Quartet has developed an innovative, fresh and genuine voice of its own in the world of chamber music. In 2017, the Quartet received the First Prize and Audience Prize at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition.
