Even though Franz Schubert died at age 31, he left this world far richer than when he was born. He left us symphonies, chamber music, sonatas for piano and for other instruments, AND also 600 songs.
One of these songs is based on a poem titled “Heidenroeslein”, translated as rose on a meadow. It tells us about a little boy who sees a lovely rose growing on a meadow. The boy runs closer to admire the rose. The boy then speaks to the rose: “I will break you”. The rose responds by saying: “If you do, I will prick you so that you will always think about me…” Etc, etc.
