The Sonata in F major, K547, was Mozart’s last work of its kind. Listening to it, we would hardly guess that it comes from one of the most prolific periods of his life: The period of the last three symphonies, the piano trio in E major, K542, and the miraculous divertimento for string trio, K563, all of which were written in rapid succession in the summer of 1788.
As things turned out, the sonata K547 first appeared in its original form in 1805, though its concluding variation movement had been issued a full decade earlier by the publisher and composer Franz Anton Hoffmeister, in a version for solo piano.
