When Schubert’s C major Piano Sonata, D840 was first published in 1861, it was given the title Relique in the mistaken belief that it was the composer’s last work. In fact, it was composed in April 1825, around the same time as Schubert began work on the Great C major Symphony.
Usually, only the first two completed movements are played, but some musicians also included the fragmentary third and fourth ones.
