Mussorgsky composed his work titled “Pictures at an Exhibition” first as a composition for piano solo. Later it was orchestrated beautifully by Maurice Ravel.
Quite often this work is performed in correctly in that the recurring theme is simply too fast. The theme represents the exhibition viewer as he walks from one painting to the next. It is simply inappropriate to have the viewer run, as it were.
