Ravel’s “La Valse” exists in three versions, all written between December 1919 and March 1920. The composer’s original piano duet version, displays all the virtuosity, technical brilliance, and sensual richness that are the hallmarks of his style.
From the opening rumblings in the bass register, dark clouds open slowly, and a waltz rhythm emerges and expands into a grand Viennese dance in the finest tradition of Johann Strauss.
This is an increasingly passionate work that strides into a spectacular conclusion.
