There was a time, however, well before the widespread use of the Internet, that classical music reached us via the format of the radio broadcast.
Long ago, radios were large consoles; later, after the development of transistors, radios became smaller and later yet, the kids walked around with Boom boxes.
During these old days, the radio stations that broadcasted music employed folks who served as hosts for individual programs such as Jazz, classical, etc.
It was around 20 years ago that I got my first opportunity to host a classical radio show at station KBOQ in Carmel, California. Some years later I hosted a similar show at KUSP in Santa Cruz, CA. Listeners were allowed to call the station, ask questions, and occasionally criticism my German pronunciation.
At both radio stations I always used a brief music segment at the very beginning of the show, before I uttered a word. It was a way of welcoming the listener. My music was always the Intermezzo Opus 117, #2 by Johannes Brahms. Click below to listen:
