I have been a great fan of violist Tabea Zimmermann for many years. She was born in Germany, and she has enjoyed an amazing career as a soloist and as a chamber music player. Some of my earliest memories are of her playing the Romantic viola music of Robert Schumann.
Recently Ms. Zimmermann appeared in a concert by the Israel Philharmonic. At the very end she agreed to play an encore that was later widely publicized by the Internet.
Watch now, as viola soloist Tabea Zimmermann, the Israel Philharmonic viola section and principal string players perform an arrangement of a composition titled “Atur Mizchech” (‘Your head is decorated’) as an encore during this recent concert in Tel Aviv.
The Israel Philharmonic’s violist Yoni Gertner arranged the song for this instrumentation. The original song takes its lyrics from a poem written in the 1950’s by Avraham Chalfi. In 1977, composer Yoni Rechter set the words to music for singer Arik Einstein, creating one of Israel’s most beloved ballads.
