Perahia Concert Review
Music is often my companion and my healer. And I have a wonderful way of using it to help me when the need is great: I connect with the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall, and I select music that I want to hear.
Yesterday was such a day, and I selected the music of Robert Schumann; specifically, the Schumann piano concerto as performed by pianist Murray Perahia.
This concert came out of the DCH’s archives, since the live performance was on April 14, 2012.
What wonderful music this is! Schumann was married to one of Europe’s premier pianists, Clara Wieck. And he gave her the opportunity to perform this amazing lyrical music. Schumann’s writing takes the melody from the piano, and he hands it to the solo clarinet, then the oboe, and later to the strings. When you listen attentively, you can hear the great creativity of this composition, even though it has become a ‘war horse’ of sorts.
