Lang at Carnegie Hall.
On Saturday, June 1, 2013, I listened to a recording of pianist Lang Lang, as he performed his concert at Carnegie Hall that took place a few years ago. Personally, I enjoyed his performance a lot.
As I was watching and listening to this DVD (twice), I came to feel that Mr. Lang has achieved acceptance. I recall that early on the public did not take him seriously. In this concert, however, I could see the deep feeling that he was able to express in several musical works, be it the slow movement of a Haydn sonata, or the quieter sadder parts of Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasie”. Also, there are many places where his face radiates great joy, which is wonderful to witness.
Here are the selections:
The first half of the program contains:
- Schumann Abegg Variations
- Haydn Sonata in C Hob XVI:50
- Schubert Wanderer Fantasie.
The second half features:
- Tan Dun Eight Memories in Watercolor
- Chopin Nocturne in D Flat
- Franz Liszt Reminiscences de Don Juan
He played three encores: Schumann’s “Traumerei”, Horses (trad. Chinese, played with his father performing on a 2-string instrument), and Liszt’s Liebestraum #3.
I found Lang Lang’s playing itself to be very impressive, with plenty of style, humor, and passion combined with an amazing technique.
And one can see a lot of “hand shots”! I could see a lot of the pianist’s hand, finger, and wrist style without losing touch with the music.
For me this was one great performance!
