Mozart:
- Gran Partita
I love music composed for wind instruments. And Mozart was a master at this particular form of music. In many cases this was entertainment for celebrations such as weddings or other social events. And Mozart’s customers asked the composer to prepare new music for many such events.
On this CD we hear two masterpieces:
Mozart:
- Serenade No. 10 in B flat major, K361 ‘Gran Partita’
- Serenade No. 12 in C minor, K388
Performed by the Harmonie de l’Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe
MusicWeb International wrote on the 30th of July, 2013:
“a period style account with none of the disadvantages sometimes attendant on more zealous period versions. It seems to me that Herreweghe catches perfectly throughout the playful and mercurial admixture of the jolly and the melancholy moods which alternate in this miraculous work…This is sensitive, civilized music-making of the highest order.”
Conductor Herreweghe shows us Mozart’s playful, jolly, and the melancholy moods, which alternate in this miraculous work. The opening “Largo” starts with a plaintive tune for the clarinet. The timbre of the original instruments lends a certain happy feelings to the “Menuetto”.
The crucial “Adagio” opens with what is one of the most heavenly melodies Mozart ever composed.
The Serenade K.388 is a good contrast to the “Gran Partita” in that it is a livelier affair, again beautifully played. Its “Andante” is terrific!
Here is the Mozart Serenade in B-flat major, known as the ‘Gran Partita’ KV 361, performed by Danmark’s Radio SymfoniOrkestret conducted by Ivan Meylemans:
Here is another interpretation of the same amazing work: Mozart’s Serenade No 10 B flat major K 361 Gran Partita, conducted by Riccardo Muti:
