Goldmark and Brahms:
- Violin Concertos
On this recording, we get an unusual coupling of ‘Hungarian’ Romantic violin concertos, one rather more familiar than that by the other composer:
- Carl Goldmark’s concerto premiered in Nuremberg, October 1878, and it pays tribute to music of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Spohr.
- The more familiar Brahms Violin Concerto is the 4th of five studio recordings by violinist Nathan Milstein. It remains the most perfect performance, recently restored to its original magnificence and clarity.
The tracks on this CD are as follows:
Bach, J S:
- Partita for solo violin No. 2 in D minor, BWV1004: Chaconne
Brahms:
- Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, with Nathan Milstein (violin)
Goldmark:
- Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 28, with Nathan Milstein (violin)
Performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, Harry Blech and Anatole Fistoulari conducting
Nathan Milstein demonstrates a purity of style, unmatched by many of his successors, while the Philharmonia Orchestra provides majesty and great artistry in their accompaniment.
As an encore, Nathan Milstein performs the Chaconne BWV1004 by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Here is Milstein’s Last Public Concert at 83 Years Old, playing Bach’s Chaconne:

(Amazing, Huh??)
And next, here is NATHAN MILSTEIN playing “Asturiana” by Manuel de Falla with pianist ERNEST LUSH. London, 1957:
What a lovely, lush sound that man created! And look at all that hair he had at age 53. (I was balding at that age). He died of a heart attack in London at age 88.
