Memorial Concert for Claudio Abbado.
This recorded concert was yet another expression of farewell to the memory of Maestro Abbado. The spirit of Claudio Abbado, the great conductor and founder of orchestras who died in January 2014, was present in the music, and in the silence.
Thousands upon thousands came to the Basilica di Santo Stefano in Bologna and to the Piazza della Scala in Milano to pay their last respects.
Here are the selections that paid the tribute:
Beethoven:
- Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 ‘Eroica’ – excerpt from August 2013, conducted by Claudio Abbado.
Alban Berg:
- Violin Concerto ‘To the Memory of an Angel’ (1935), with soloist Isabelle Faust (violin)
Hölderlin:
- Brot und Wein
Mahler:
- Symphony No. 3 in D minor: Langsam
Schubert:
- Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D759 ‘Unfinished’ – Allegro moderato
Performed by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Andris Nelsons conducting.
In Lucerne, the members of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA paid tribute to this extraordinary man and friend with this deeply moving concert, as you can see in the video, below.
The Zurich newspaper, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, wrote:
“The emotional intensity was unbelievable; this could only be achieved by true musicians, by those capable of love”.
Here is the video of the Memorial Concert for Claudio Abbado, performed by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, Andris Nelsons conducting.
Watch at the end of the music for the huge emotional reaction on the part of the performing musicians.
And next, here is how another orchestra remembered Maestro Abbado:
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Conducted by Daniele Gatti performed the Robert Schumann Symphony #3 in a much less somber environment:
