This orchestra is one of the finest in the country. It is led by Riccardo Muti, its current music director, who is an elegant and exacting master of any music or opera that he directs.
The concert on January 31st offers two German masterworks by Brahms (the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-Flat Major, with Yefim Bronfman) and Schumann (the Symphony No. 3, “Rhenish”)

Brahms’ wonderful Piano Concerto No. 2 is a work of extraordinary beauty that challenges the soloist’s technique and musical maturity.
The lyrical horn call that opens the work ushers in this concerto, followed not by the expected slow movement, but by a powerful, rhythmical scherzo. The ensuing lovely Andante features a singing cello solo, in a beautiful duet with the piano, and a joyous finale rounds out this exciting work.
