- Symphonies Nos. 9 and 10
Mahler was a highly complex man. His whole being was filled with music. He was a conductor and a composer; and in my view he actually painted with music. He used music to describe Nature as he experienced it.
And he suffered, because he always felt like a stranger: He lived in Austria, yet he was born in Kaliště, the Czech Republic. He was born Jewish in a country that was openly anti-Semitic. Yet Mahler had a passion for wanting to be accepted professionally, and as a musician.
Mahler knew that the Symphony #9 was Beethoven’s last. So he hesitated to begin his own 9th for fear that he would die soon thereafter. He never completed the Tenth… Mahler died in Vienna in 1911.
