Christiane Karg.

Christiane Karg’s new recording:

  • “Scene!”

Christiane Karg is one of my favorite sopranos, not only because of her voice. Beyond that, she is able to bring a huge emotional quality to her performances, and for me that makes a great positive difference.

“Scene!” is the title of her new CD, and it demonstrates how her voice has developed further during the past few years.

This recording is about emotional scenes that fit Ms. Karg’s strengths: These concert arias are reduced to a few minutes and focused on one single character.
We hear the following selections:

Beethoven:

  • Ah! Perfido, Op. 65

Haydn:

  • Cantate “Miseri Noi!, Misera Patria (Hob. XXIV a.7)
  • Berenice, che fai? (Scena di Berenice), Hob XXIVa:10

Mendelssohn:

  • Infelice – concert aria for soprano and orchestra, Op. 94

Mozart:

  • Ch’io mi scordi di te?… Non temer, amato bene, K505
  • Misera, dove son? – Ah! non son’ io che parlo! K369

Performed by Christiane Karg (soprano), with the Arcangelo Ensemble, conducted by Jonathan Cohen.

Christiane Karg is one of those fascinating voices, and who knows which concert arias Haydn or Mozart might have written specifically for her. She is certainly one of today’s most amazing singers.

After studying in Salzburg, her career initially took off in Hamburg and Frankfurt. Her solo career has since taken her to the Semperoper in Dresden, to Salzburg, Covent Garden, and Glyndebourne, and the list of her stage partners is clear evidence of her advancing status.

Here is Ms. Karg speaking about (with translation), and rehearsing the selections on this CD:

And next, here she is in George Frederic Handel’s “Dolci chiodi, amate spine” from La Resurrezione:
