I listened yesterday to a new recording by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra perform the symphonies numbers 4 and 5 by Beethoven. The conductor was Philippe Jordan.
My principal enjoyment came from two factors: Strict adherance to dynamics, and excellent selection of tempi.
The Beethoven 4 is one of my great favorites, even though it does not belong to the well known “War horses”, such as the 3,5,7, and 9.
What a wonderful introduction we have here, in the Haydn tradition, yet full of creativity. How peaceful is this music, before the Allegro begins.
